Nearly over 8 decades have passed since Universal Pictures released “The Mummy” starring Boris Karloff as the title character. Film technology has changed quite a bit since 1932 and all that dazzling excitement is on display in a short teaser trailer for the reboot, which will star acclaimed actor; Tom Cruise. Universal released the teaser on Thursday with a promise of a longer trailer coming this weekend.
The teaser has limited detail, but we get a glimpse of the weird-eyed mummy, played by Sofia Boutella, and see our hero Nick Morton (Cruise) swimming in an underwater tomb and doing his infamous running in a museum. The trailer ends with a clip of our mummy extending her hands and screaming as buildings disintegrates behind her.
According to the plot, the mummy is an ancient princess who gets awakened in present day, “bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.”
“The Mummy” is the first installment in a possible franchise like Marvel. If all goes well, we can probably expect interconnected films that tap into vampire hunter Van Helsing, Monster of the Frankenstein, Invisible Man, Wolf Man and even the beast from the Black Lagoon.
The teaser, released Thursday, shows quick cuts of a mummy being removed from an underground cave somewhere in a desert, and Tom Cruise running as the beast comes to conquer the world. The prophecy in the movies says it all, “Welcome to the world of gods and devils.”
Cruise took to Twitter and tweeted the release of the teaser, saying, “I am so thrilled to be able to bring #TheMummy back to life. I cannot wait until you guys get to see the full trailer on Sunday.”
The reboot movie also stars Russell Crowe, Courtney B. Vance, Annabelle Wallis and J’ Johnson. The director is Alex Kurtzman.
“The Mummy” is due in theaters in June 2017.
