WINNEMUCCA —Lowry High School’s future business leaders made an impressive showing at their state conference. April 21-23, members from the school’s Future Business of Leaders of America (FBLA) organization attended the State Business Leadership Conference in Las Vegas where they competed against 40 schools and 467 students to determine who will represent Nevada at the national level this summer.

WASHINGTON DC — A bill that would designate new wilderness in Nevada was favorably reported by the Senate's Energy and Natural Resources Committee with a broad base of support and now awaits action in the full US Senate.
The Pine Forest Range Recreation Enhancement Act of 2013 (S. 342) was introduced by Senators Dean Heller and Harry Reid. A companion bill, H.R. 433 was introduced by Representative Mark Amodei in the House, supported by the entire Nevada congressional delegation.

WINNEMUCCA – The man police found hovering over his girlfriend with a knife during a domestic dispute last May was sentenced to prison on Monday (May 13).
Dusty Colin Sam, 28, was sentenced for felony burglary to 38-96 months in prison with 376 days time served. At the time of his arrest he was charged with attempted murder, false imprisonment, interrupting a 911 call, domestic battery, and resisting arrest.

This Saturday, May 18th, the Winnemucca Community Garden will host an Afternoon of Live Music in the Garden. Every year the Community Garden has an annual “kick off” event – this year rather than having a dinner and silent auction, the Garden has decided to have an outdoor, family-friendly event with entertainment for everyone.

New principal for WJHS; school board moves forward with one-day delayed start

WINNEMUCCA – The Humboldt County School District Board of Trustees agreed to a late school start once a week, and McDermitt Combined School will go back to a five-day schedule, which were just a few of the items under consideration on Tuesday (May 14).
The first announcement, though, was the appointment of Janet Kennedy to replace Ray Garrison as principal of Winnemucca Jr. High School. Kennedy is currently the principal of McDermitt Combined School and Garrison is retiring.

WINNEMUCCA—Mike Snow recently traveled nearly 7,000 miles to help provide “legs” to those who can’t walk.
“It was a privilege,” said the Winnemucca physical therapist and owner of Rehab Services of Nevada. “You can’t imagine what a difference this program makes in people’s lives.”

NHP trooper seizes 40 pounds of marijuana during traffic stop

WINNEMUCCA – A Utah resident traveling through Humboldt County was arrested on Monday (May 13) for allegedly transporting more than 40 pounds of marijuana.
Trooper Chris Meeks stopped the vehicle on Interstate 80 near milemarker 192 eastbound on the allegation the driver was traveling at 87 mph in a 75 mph zone. According to Meek's statement, he made contact with the driver at which time he could smell raw marijuana emanating from the vehicle.
