NASHVILLE, TENN -- Trucking company operators around the nation expressed surprise and disgust Friday about revelations that the Pilot Flying J truck-stop chain may have deliberately cheated its customers on rebates they were supposed to have earned on their diesel-fuel purchases."

Youth grief program moving forward with hospital's help

WINNEMUCCA — Humboldt General Hospital saw an opportunity that it just couldn’t pass by recently.  The Frontier Community Action Agency has been working to launch a grief network to help children and their families cope with the loss of a loved one.

Winnemucca to honor crime victims and advocates for National Crime Victims’ Rights Week

Winnemucca will celebrate 2013 National Crime Victims’ Rights Week (April 21-27) with a series of events. This year’s theme— New Challenges. New Solutions. — celebrates the spirit that will advance the progress that has been achieved.

Advocates have made remarkable progress for crime victims, despite many challenges. Only 30 years ago, crime victims had no rights, access to crime victim compensation, or services to help rebuild their lives. They were often excluded from courtrooms, treated as an afterthought by the criminal justice system, and denied an opportunity to speak at sentencing.

 

HCSD Board members discuss staffing patterns and tentative budget for FY14

The Humboldt County School Board of Trustees voted to increase staff levels next year as  the student population is expected to grow by an estimated 2 percent over the next two years. The increase in staffing levels was one of several issues on the board's agenda on Tuesday (April 8).

 

Labor Day organizers look to increase attendance with less rodeo and the addition of motorized events

WINNEMUCCA — After years of dwindling attendance, organizers have opted to cancel the second day of the Labor Day Rodeo in favor of an activity they hope will bring folks out to the fairgrounds on Sunday: motorized events.

Winnemucca Convention and Visitors Authority Director Kim Petersen told the WCVA Board organizers have decided to invite locals to participate in a truck pull along with a pro-tractor pull in an effort to beef up Sunday attendance.

WINNEMUCCA – It's no secret the county's switch from analogue to digital radio communications was bumpy and continues to be so. However, there are other behind-the-scenes issues that are not a part of the public discussion but plague effective emergency dispatch.

 

All properties sold at tax auction

All 18 properties up for sale at Humboldt County's delinquent tax auction were sold on Friday (April 12). According to Treasurer Gina Rackley, the total taxes owed on the properties was $13,819.77, but the total bid revenue was $98,800.

 

Additional safety measures in place following explosions in Boston

The Nevada Department of Public Safety (DPS) and all law enforcement agencies statewide take all direct and indirect threats very seriously and will continue to be proactive with security and enforcement strategies.  As a precautionary measure, the DPS is collaborating with federal officials to monitor and implement additional safety efforts after yesterday's tragic event in Boston.

Man who admitted to killing infant son sentenced again – on lesser charge

WINNEMUCCA – The man who was sentenced in 2006 to life in prison for killing his infant son was back in court to be sentenced to a lesser charge and a reduced amount of time in prison.

James Barker pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in February and was sentenced to 10-25 years in prison on Monday (April 15) in 6th Judicial District Court. He has already served seven years of that sentence.
