City takes next step with new fire station; hires new treasurer

The City of Winnemucca is a little closer to constructing a new fire station after entering into an agreement with Aloiau Architecture on Tuesday (April 23) to complete the next phase of the project. The agreement was the topic of discussion at the regular meeting of the Winnemucca City Council, who also confirmed the hiring of a new city treasurer.

Governor Brian Sandoval has proclaimed April 21-27, 2013 National Volunteer Week in Nevada to both celebrate Nevada’s volunteers and inspire more Nevadans to serve their communities.  Nevada Volunteers, the Governor's Commission on Service, encourages all Nevadans to find ways to participate in service this week.

HCSD approves easement for Great Basin Drive extension

Winnemucca City Manager Steve West was before the Humboldt County School District Board of Trustees on Tuesday (April 23) to get a 30-foot easement for the completion of Great Basin Drive. The board granted the request for the easement, which is adjacent to Lowry High School.

NHP Trooper honored for saving a life

Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Zach Petersen was honored for helping to save a life with the defibrillator he carries in his patrol vehicle. The award was presented by EMS Director Pat Songer Tuesday (April 23) during a meeting of the HGH Board of Trustees. The AEDs carried by all law enforcement in Humboldt County are provided by Humboldt General Hospital along with the training to use them. Petersen said, “I want to thank Pat Songer and staff for everything they do for us and for providing equipment we can use to save lives.” (shown from left) Pat Songer, Sgt. HGH honors humanitarians

The first recipient of Humboldt General Hospital's Humanity Award was honored Tuesday evening (April 23) during the HGH Board of Trustees regular meeting.  (shown) Tim Topliff was honored for his effort to help another who needed CPR in an incident that occurred along the highway.

Commission contracts for representation during landfill negotiations

WINNEMUCCA – Feeling they lacked the expertise for such an undertaking, the Humboldt County Commissioners have contracted with a legal firm to represent them during negotiations with Jungo Land & Investments over the host fees relating to the proposed Jungo Road Landfill. The issue was before the Commission on Monday (April 15).

NOVS ROVER program comes back to Lovelock and Winnemucca in May

The Nevada Office of Veterans Services (NOVS) Veterans Outreach “ROVER” Program will visit Lovelock, May 7 and Winnemucca, May 9 so veterans and family members will be able to meet with a Veterans Service Officer (VSO) learn about benefits and services they may be eligible for but unaware of.

NASHVILLE, TENN -- Trucking company operators around the nation expressed surprise and disgust Friday about revelations that the Pilot Flying J truck-stop chain may have deliberately cheated its customers on rebates they were supposed to have earned on their diesel-fuel purchases."

Youth grief program moving forward with hospital's help

WINNEMUCCA — Humboldt General Hospital saw an opportunity that it just couldn’t pass by recently.  The Frontier Community Action Agency has been working to launch a grief network to help children and their families cope with the loss of a loved one.
