‘Neighbor to Neighbor Volunteer Day of Service’ coming May 4

WINNEMUCCA — All Humboldt County residents are invited to take part in this area’s first annual volunteer day of service.  The “Neighbor to Neighbor Volunteer Day of Service” will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 4. Participants will meet at Vesco City Park at 9 a.m. to receive their assignments. Following four hours of service, all participants will return to the park for lunch at 1 p.m.

Lowry students argue civil rights cases during Law Day 2013

W INNEMUCCA – Students from Lowry High School stepped up to the podium to present arguments and decide cases on civil rights issues as part of the American Bar Association's annual Law Day held Thursday (April 25).

BLM seeks public input on proposed Western Lithium clay project

WINNEMUCCA --The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Winnemucca District (Humboldt River Field Office) is seeking public input on an Environmental Assessment (EA) for Western Lithium Corporation’s (WLC) proposed Kings Valley Clay Mine Project that would be located at Thacker Pass, (adjacent to State Route 293), 21 miles northwest of Orovada, Nev.

 

Governor encourages Grammar School students to keep reading

Governor Brian Sandoval was in town on Friday (April 26) to personally congratulate the students of the Winnemucca Grammar School on their reading a ccomplishments. The Governor shook hands with each student and gave them their reading medals and a commemorative coin. Sandoval encouraged the students to keep reading and to stay in school.

 



 

WPD officer pleads guilty to misdemeanor

WINNEMUCCA – The Winnemucca Police Department officer accused of harassing a Humboldt County Sheriff's Office deputy was in Union Township Justice Court on Friday (April 26) where he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor harassment

Will Bourland was sentenced to pay a $500 fine plus $127 in court fees.
 

Monday's jury trial canceled

The jury trial scheduled for Monday (April 29) has been canceled. Residents who received a summons to appear in court for jury duty may disregard the notice.  Those with questions may call the number that appears on the summons.

Winnemucca Balloons proudly presents the 2nd Annual Hot Air Balloon Festival, coming to the Winnemucca Sports Complex April 27 & 28. The organization is building upon the success of last years event in which 4 balloons graced the skies over Winnemucca.
 

"Every 15 Minutes" program demonstrates consequences of drinking and driving

It's hard to believe after decades of outreach on the dangers of drinking and driving there's anyone who hasn't gotten the message. Yet, students at Lowry High School say they've been in cars with people and know others in trouble for driving while intoxicated.

Continuing the diligent effort to reduce the numbers of teens killed or arrested for driving drunk, HGH EMS arranged to bring the “Every 15 Minutes” program.  The program stresses there are consequences to drinking and driving.  (shown right) Death stalks the school while (left) a student learns about the criminal side of drinking and driving.

 

LHS Students complete EMT program

Humboldt General Hospital recently honored the first group of Lowry High School students who completed the EMT class. The class was a partnership between the hospital and the school and was part of a larger effort to expand and strengthen the Career and Technical Education classes.
