Team Operation Easter commits to a second year

They were a small group who – upon hearing there was no community-wide Easter egg hunt – went to work organizing. They collected eggs, stuffed them with goodies, and arranged for special prizes.

The result was phenomenal. There appeared to be about 500 kids in a line that stretched back to Les Schwab, each racing for their share of 12,000 eggs scattered across the Sports Complex. 

 

Congressman takes advantage of recess to meet with rural voters

Immigration and land bills will highlight the upcoming Congressional session Congressman Mark Amodei told voters on a stopover visit to Winnemucca on Wednesday (May 1).

Amodei was the guest of local resident Bud Vetter at the Rotary luncheon.  Vetter remembers the congressman from back in the day when he played basketball for Carson City and Vetter played for Lowry.  Vetter also invited fellow basketball players Vince Mendiola and Joe Dendary.

 

Two cases involving felony domestic violence bound over to district court

WINNEMUCCA – Two men arrested following alleged acts of violence against family members were bound over to 6th Judicial District Court for trial on Tuesday (April 30).

 

Interstate closed due to vehicle fire

(UPDATED)  As of 5:15 a.m., Nevada Highway Patrol and NDOT were able to open one travel lane.

UPDATED: According to Nevada Highway Patrol, the semi fire that has the Interstate closed at milemarker 160 westbound started shortly after 2 a.m. The semi was reportedly carrying produce and it took firefighters about an hour to put out the flames. NDOT is working aggressively to open one travel lane. Although there's no guarantees, they hope to have at least one lane open by 5 a.m. or shortly thereafter.



 

Land Management Rule will facilitate renewable energy development on public lands

In support of the Administration’s strategy to develop environmentally responsible renewable energy on public lands, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is issuing a regulation that will facilitate right-of-way applications for lands with wind and solar energy development potential.

 

‘Neighbor to Neighbor Volunteer Day of Service’ coming May 4

WINNEMUCCA — All Humboldt County residents are invited to take part in this area’s first annual volunteer day of service.  The “Neighbor to Neighbor Volunteer Day of Service” will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 4. Participants will meet at Vesco City Park at 9 a.m. to receive their assignments. Following four hours of service, all participants will return to the park for lunch at 1 p.m.

Lowry students argue civil rights cases during Law Day 2013

W INNEMUCCA – Students from Lowry High School stepped up to the podium to present arguments and decide cases on civil rights issues as part of the American Bar Association's annual Law Day held Thursday (April 25).

BLM seeks public input on proposed Western Lithium clay project

WINNEMUCCA --The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Winnemucca District (Humboldt River Field Office) is seeking public input on an Environmental Assessment (EA) for Western Lithium Corporation’s (WLC) proposed Kings Valley Clay Mine Project that would be located at Thacker Pass, (adjacent to State Route 293), 21 miles northwest of Orovada, Nev.

 

Governor encourages Grammar School students to keep reading

Governor Brian Sandoval was in town on Friday (April 26) to personally congratulate the students of the Winnemucca Grammar School on their reading a ccomplishments. The Governor shook hands with each student and gave them their reading medals and a commemorative coin. Sandoval encouraged the students to keep reading and to stay in school.
