You asked the question: Why don't doctors at HGH complete rape kits?

Reader Question: Why don't the doctors at Humboldt General Hospital, either in ER or staff, complete rape kits?

SPJ Responds: Just so everyone's on the same page, rape kits are items used by medical personnel to gather and preserve physical evidence following a sexual assault. In Humboldt County, those who are victims of sexual assault must be taken to Reno to have the rape kits completed because the procedure is not done at Humboldt General Hospital. The question was:  why not? Aren't there doctors there?

U.S. 95 Fatality - 2010.08.26WINNEMUCCA — The Nevada Highway Patrol has released the identity of the man killed Friday (Aug. 20) in a collision between a motorcycle and a commercial vehicle on US 95.

The victim was identified as Douglas Earl Bleiler, 61, of Winnemucca.

According to the accident report, at the time of the collision the commercial vehicle was northbound and either stopped or was slow moving while preparing to turn right off of US 95.

Evidence at the scene indicated Bleiler became aware of the vehicle in front of him, applied the brakes, and went into a locked-wheel skid before impacting the back of the commercial vehicle. The report indicated there was 135 feet of skid marks where Bleiler attempted to stop his motorcycle. While 135 feet may seem significant, in a 70 mph zone that’s just a matter of seconds.

Sgt. Greg Johnson, of the Nevada Highway Patrol, said the victim had a motorcycle learner's permit. He said inexperience and inattention may have been factors in the accident.

Bureau of Land Management Director Bob Abbey announced today that the agency will carefully review on a case-by-case basis each approved and pending request to hold Off-Highway Vehicle races on public lands for which it issues permits. The measures come after the injuries and deaths of spectators during an OHV race in Southern California.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragedy in the California Johnson Valley OHV open area,” Abbey said. “We have launched an internal review of the tragedy and we will be taking a very close look at all approved permits and pending requests and determine whether they are appropriate on a case-by-case basis. When we permit any activity on the public lands, our first priority is public and employee safety and health. We will look at these requests carefully and consider the safety record of the individual or organization requesting a permit.”
