The Winnemucca Golf Course is coming closer to having the water hazards locals have been talking about for more than 20 years. Operators with heavy equipment are on scene digging out the two one-acre ponds, which will be ten-feet deep.
City Manager Steve West explained the depth was necessary to help keep the algae down, though each pond will also have circulating pumps. The ponds were made possible in part because the sprinkler system installed last year allows water to be pumped into the ponds, but it’s also been possible through donations received from Newmont, Cashman Equipment, Hunewill Construction, and a joint effort by the city and Humboldt County.
West said the excavation is done on the first pond and excavation on the second pond is expected to be completed next week. The ponds will then sit for the winter until the heavy liners, which keep the water from leaking into the ground, will be installed next spring. West said because it’s the off-season there has been only minor interruption to the business of the golf course. |
