The Winnemucca City Council’s efforts to purchase the Restoration Shop, which was part of the now-defunct car museum, is moving forward. The city intends to use the two buildings for the city’s public safety headquarters and the complex will house both the Winnemucca Police Department and the Winnemucca Volunteer Fire Department.
The city is purchasing the buildings and half the land (2.2 acres) for $700,000, which will be paid in installments. The city must pay $400,000 by the end of the year, then make a $150,000 payment by July 1, 2010, and another $150,000 payment by July 1, 2011.
City Manager Steve West noted the current owner of the building really wanted the city to have the building and was therefore flexible with the sale. He explained the city has been saving money for a public safety building for some time, but they just weren’t going to get a deal as good as this. As an example, West said they’ve estimated a building for the fire department alone would cost approximately $2 million. He commented, “This is exciting for the city … we’ll get into a building a lot sooner than if we started over with a new building. West said the city has established a $200,000 budget for renovating the building, but he doesn’t believe they’ll need that much. The 2.2 acres will also allow the city to expand should the need arise. |
