WCVA taking closer look at the Winnemucca Hotel

Print

WINNEMUCCA — When WCVA Director Kim Petersen initially looked at the possibility of the board buying the Winnemucca Hotel, he thought there might be multiple benefits and revenue sources.

He thought community organizations could hold meetings there, that there was room for a Basque Cultural Center, or perhaps they could bring in tourism dollars by hosting Ghost Tours.

After touring the old building he changed his mind and thought the place might best be described as a money pit. Or a fire trap. Or a really bad idea for the WCVA.

Hospital board votes to give Kim 180-day notice

Print

WINNEMUCCA — The Humboldt General Hospital Board of Trustees voted 4-0 on Tuesday (April 24) to give notice to Dr. Soon Kim they intended to take advantage of the opt-out clause in her contract.

The clause allowed either the hospital or Dr. Kim to back out of the contract without cause with 180-day notice to the other side.  Trustee Dr. Kim could not vote because of the conflict of interest. Trustee Shellie Cooney was not present but could not have voted, at any rate, because she works in Dr. Kim’s office.

Economic recovery gives school budget some breathing room

Print

WINNEMUCCA —  After four years of holding the budget together spit and gum, the Humboldt County School District Board of Trustees was able to craft a budget that allowed for a little breathing room.

The trustees adopted the $41.3 million budget presented by Asst. Superintendent Dr. Dave Jensen on Tuesday (April 10). Jensen explained a slight uptick in the economy resulted in funding staying about the same for the second year, which is an improvement over years past when district’s faced yearly budget cuts.

French asks for review of Kim’s contract

Print

WINNEMUCCA — Calling it a bad position to be in, Commissioner Jim French raised the possibility the hospital may have to hire a new surgeon depending on the outcome of November’s election.  French’s comments came during the regular meeting of the Humboldt General Hospital Board of Trustees on Tuesday (March 27).

His comments were in reference to Board Trustee Dr. Soon Kim, who does double-duty as the hospital’s general surgeon and sits on the board of trustees. Dr. Kim filed for reelection earlier this month – despite new hospital policy that prevents employees from sitting on the governing board.

Commission votes to keep Sonoma Industries afloat

Print

WINNEMUCCA — It was what the Humboldt County Commission said would happen when the State of Nevada began reducing the budget: the cost of social programs would fall to local government.

Facing budget cuts and competition from the city’s numerous thrift stores, Sonoma Industries asked for and received $16,000 to help get them through the fiscal year. Additionally, they asked the commission to grant them $50,000 in the 2012 – 2013 budget.
