WINNEMUCCA — One person’s trash is another person’s treasure.  This was certainly the case for the Humboldt County Amateur Radio Emergency Service (HC-ARES) group who recently received a donation of used radio equipment from Barrick Gold of North America.

Barrick no longer had use for a large amount of outdated radio equipment, which included a variety of handheld radios, mobile radios, and master repeaters. Rather than disposing of the equipment, Barrick offered to donate it to the local radio clubs who can modify and restore the equipment and then put it to good use in community service.

The Elko Amateur Radio Club and the Elko Ham Operators Club also received additional radio equipment from Barrick.
The equipment donated to the HC-ARES will be used to provide essential amateur radio communications for the rural areas of north Humboldt County.

The Amateur Radio Emergency Service® (ARES) consists of licensed amateurs who have voluntarily registered their qualifications and equipment for communications duty in the public service when disaster strikes.

Specializing in “traffic handling”, ARES volunteers assist the community, Red Cross, the Salvation Army and local hospitals in passing essential and basic welfare communications without the use of telephones, Internet or cell service.

All radio clubs are non-profit organizations that serve the needs of Northern Nevada communities by providing emergency communications, weather advisories and warnings, and backup communications to many served agencies including some Emergency Operation Centers around the state.

Recently, on a rural road south of Elko, an amateur radio operator happened upon a driver in need of medical assistance. There was no cell service available and the subject was miles away from the nearest town.  Using amateur radio, communications were established and medical assistance was dispatched.  Amateur radio saved a life!

In your opinion...

Would you support using taxpayer dollars to buy and renovate the Winnemucca Hotel for local use?
