WINNEMUCCA — It can cost upwards of $10,000 just in equipment for a new firefighter. Then the recruit may decided the job is not for him. Or, the physical exertion may turn out to be too much.
In an effort to test out five new recruits before the money was spent, the Winnemucca Rural Fire Department recently held two days of training, which included a day at the airport training grounds working with the equipment.

An HGH Press Release
WINNEMUCCA— Humboldt General Hospital’s nursing home is tied for the highest ranked facility in the State of Nevada, according to Medicare data released last month.
Harmony Manor achieved a five-star rating in overall quality. While several of the state’s 49 homes also achieved a five-star rating, only one other has the same high rating in all three of the ranked categories.
According to Harmony Manor Nurse Manager Robin Gillis, the nursing home/skilled nursing facility has been rated at five stars before. However, she said this year’s rankings called for even more celebration after one of three sub-rankings went from three stars to four following last fall’s inspections.

That Thursday, Louann Logan showed up at Humboldt General Hospital at 5 a.m. The previous Tuesday had been her due date and she was anxious to get her induction process underway. Little did she know that her sister, Barbara Logan, also nearly nine months pregnant, had been laboring since 2 a.m. that same morning; she showed up at the hospital at 6 a.m. in the room next door.

Nutrition class for transitional housing tenants a big success

WINNEMUCCA — The Food Bank of Northern Nevada, the Family Stability Council's Transitional Housing Program, and the Winnemucca Community Garden collaborated with Health and Fitness Sleuth, Patricia Setzer, to offer classes on healthy nutrition for the clients of the transitional housing program.
Classes were held at the transitional housing apartments and followed the Food Bank of Northern Nevada's Smart Shopper curriculum which educates participants about strategies for purchasing adequate, nutritious food throughout the month. In four one-hour classes, Setzer taught about how to accurately read a Nutrition Facts label and identify unhealthy ingredients when shopping, the USDA food pyramid, and the false label language many food companies use to sell their products. Each class ended with a healthy, homemade, delicious snack. One class participant noted, “ I was surprised that the snacks were healthy and still tasted so good.”
Red Cross leadership meets with local volunteers to discuss streamlining the organization

WINNEMUCCA — American Red Cross leadership was here Tuesday (January 19) to promote the streamlining of operations to a sometimes skeptical group of volunteers. The move was necessary due to a decade of costly disasters in a bad economy.
On hand to outline some of the changes was Pat Hofmaster, the vice president of the ARC’s West Division. She explained the organization's financial struggles made the changes necessary to ensure the ARC’s sustainability in the future. The changes will not affect the services provided to the community, such as disaster relief, but will change the way individual chapters do business. For example, instead of having a paid bookkeeper in every chapter, the bookkeeping will be centralized and utilized by the surrounding five states.
