WINNEMUCCA —The Humboldt Hospital Auxiliary recently rolled out the welcome mat for volunteers to its organization. (shown) Humboldt Hospital Auxiliary Membership Chairman Bonnie Zabala (seated) welcomed renewing members to the group’s annual Membership Meeting January 19, including Marsha Colby (standing), Dorothy Fiske (back left) and Betty Steinhauer.

The Auxiliary, one of Humboldt County’s longest standing and most respected volunteer organizations, hosted an informational membership meeting January 19 with the goal of renewing memberships for existing volunteers, and encouraging other local residents to join.

The group, whose members are known by their pink jackets, serve as the fundraising arm of Humboldt General Hospital. Since the Auxiliary’s inception in 1969, members have donated over $2 million to Humboldt General Hospital—money that has purchased everything from hospital beds to surgical equipment to a blanket warmer for the hospital’s long-term care facility, Harmony Manor.

“This is a great organization,” Humboldt Hospital Auxiliary President Joe McIntyre told the group of nearly 40 people. “Everyone is welcome.”

McIntyre explained that Auxiliary members volunteer their time at the group’s main funding source, the Poke & Peek Thrift Shop, where they sort, price, display and sell clothing, toys, books and household items. Other volunteers help out at Harmony Manor and within the hospital itself.

“It is very rewarding,” said McIntyre. “We have been able to accomplish great things together and we would love other community members to join us in that effort.”

Thursday’s meeting also included remarks from Humboldt General Hospital Radiology Manager Pam Wickkiser, who spoke to the group about the hospital’s new digital mammography system. An open house has been scheduled to introduce the new equipment to the community from 8 a.m.to 10 a.m. Saturday, January 28, in the Radiology Department.

Humboldt General Hospital CEO/Administrator Jim Parrish was the evening’s special guest speaker. He reviewed the hospital’s accomplishments from the past year and explained HGH’s next expansion project in the acute care wing, which will privatize all patient rooms. Parrish said that construction is expected to kick off in March.

The group also enjoyed refreshments as well as a drawing for door prizes.

McIntyre said the organization welcomes volunteers all year long, including men, women and junior members.

“Whether you can donate one hour a month or two hours a week,” said McIntyre, “we believe this is a cause worthy of your time.”

He added, “This is a great way to give something back to the community.”
