This year’s special guest is Stacy Pearsall, a highly decorated Iraq War military combat photographer. During her twelve years as a military photographer, she traveled to over 41 countries, took over 500,000 photos, and endured over 24 medical procedures to repair combat wounds sustained in battle.
Her three tours in Iraq earned her the Bronze Star Medal and Commendation with Valor for heroic actions under fire. Pearsall will share stunning images and recount some of the most dramatic and compelling moments behind making them. Each image will be accompanied by a personal anecdote, recounting the circumstances surrounding the picture and what it meant to her.
The schedule of special speakers also includes:
On Friday night, March 9th the husband and wife team, Al Petteway and Amy White will perform “High in the Blue Ridge,” combining live music with stunning photographic images of the natural surroundings near their home in the mountains of Western North Carolina. This award winning duo of musicians and photographers and won numerous awards and their photographs have been published extensively.
Portraying the famed World II correspondent Ernie Pyle, Doug Mishler will bring to life the tense and uncertain conditions of ordinary GIs. Pyle was an “embedded journalist” of his day, placing himself in the same danger as the troops. His unpretentious pieces about their hardships and sacrifices riveted the attention of millions of readers, and in 1944 he won the Pulitzer Prize for his work.
A sixth generation cattle rancher from Bridgeport, California, Blair Hunewill, calls his presentation “Ranchin’ Roots and Travelin’ Boots.” The Hunewill Ranch has been a family operation since its founding in 1861 and recently celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2011. Hunewill’s love of travel has taken him to thirty-two countries on six continents. Hunewill will share stories and images from his extensive travels, life as a rancher, and climbing Sierra peaks.
Shooting The West also will include additional presentations on the photography of the West and ranching; hands-on workshops on digital manipulation; how to take action and sports photos; a field trip; and plenty of opportunity to talk one-and-one with the pros.
