Winnemucca in the news (sort of)

Print
As the G.O.P. wraps things up in Florida, the nation prepares for the Nevada Republican Caucus this Saturday (Feb. 4).  Meanwhile, over at The American Spectator, it's not all about Vegas:  Winnemucca, Here We Come

In the interest of full disclosure, this article is more about a great photo of downtown and not so much our politics.  But it is a great photo.

GBAE Presents: Ramblin’ Jack Elliott

Print
Ramblin’ Jack Elliott is going to make another visit to the Martin Hotel in Winnemucca.   We’re thrilled to have one of the most mythical characters in American music visit our cozy little venue for the third time.

Jack Elliott set off sparks in London when he traveled there in 1955.   The young musicians in England were just starting to investigate American blues and traditional country music.   Into their midst fell a guitar playing cowboy.   Jack showed up in this world of proper gentlemen in his boots, his jeans, and wearing his Stetson.   He could play flawlessly in the styles they had only heard but never seen.   Jack’s time in England and Europe helped prime the British Invasion that shows up on our shores 10 years later…

School board updated on capital improvements

Print
WINNEMUCCA — The Humboldt County School District continues to make capital improvements to the county’s aging school buildings.
The Board of Trustees received an update at their Tuesday (Jan. 24) meeting on the capital improvements made during the last season and an outline of future needs.

The money for the updates was made possible from an anticipated $8.5 million ten-year rollover bond approved by the voters in 2008. In 2009, the district began using the money for improvement projects.
The update was provided by Kevin Monsey of Mike Mitchell Management, which is the consulting firm overseeing the capital improvement projects.

New exhibit features photographs from the Great Basin

Print
The Humboldt County Library presents Great Basin Exteriors: A Photographic Survey, an exhibition of 30 photographs by three regional artists – Adam Jahiel, Daniel Cheek and Nolan Preece – which examines loss, change and abandonment in the American West.

In this exhibit, the Great Basin is roughly defined as the area between the Wasatch Mountains along the Idaho and Utah borders and the Sierra Nevada Mountains along the Nevada and California borders. The three photographers featured in the exhibit have, independently, concentrated on the documentation of subjects that are changing in or rapidly disappearing from the Western landscape.
