WINNEMUCCA — It can cost upwards of $10,000 just in equipment for a new firefighter. Then the recruit may decided the job is not for him. Or, the physical exertion may turn out to be too much.
In an effort to test out five new recruits before the money was spent, the Winnemucca Rural Fire Department recently held two days of training, which included a day at the airport training grounds working with the equipment.

An HGH Press Release
WINNEMUCCA— Humboldt General Hospital’s nursing home is tied for the highest ranked facility in the State of Nevada, according to Medicare data released last month.
Harmony Manor achieved a five-star rating in overall quality. While several of the state’s 49 homes also achieved a five-star rating, only one other has the same high rating in all three of the ranked categories.
According to Harmony Manor Nurse Manager Robin Gillis, the nursing home/skilled nursing facility has been rated at five stars before. However, she said this year’s rankings called for even more celebration after one of three sub-rankings went from three stars to four following last fall’s inspections.

Little did she know that her sister, Barbara Logan, also nearly nine months pregnant, had been laboring since 2 a.m. that same morning; she showed up at the hospital at 6 a.m. in the room next door.

Ag District 3 Press Release
WINNEMUCCA — Local rancher Buster Dufurrena was honored this weekend as the sixth recipient of the “Ranch Hand of the Year” award. The award is sponsored by the Agricultural District No. 3 as a way to recognize those men and women who make their living as ranch hands, seven days a week, 365 days a year.
“We wished to recognize the outstanding ranch hands who have contributed so much, not only to the ranching community, but to cowboy heritage itself,” said Kim Petersen, Director of the Agricultural District No. 3.
This year’s award will be even more meaningful because it was 21 years ago when Buster Dufurrena’s sons, Tim, Dan and Hank, decided to kick off a little friendly competition between neighbors—a friendly competition that has now become the Winnemucca Ranch Hand Rodeo.

Karl Walquist, of NVEnergy said the outages were in the early morning hours and most power was restored by 9 a.m. There is a slight chance that rain and snow could return to the area beginning tomorrow and through next week.
Toastmasters invites locals to improve their public speaking and communication abilities

WINNEMUCCA — The fear of public speaking didn’t change with the introduction of PowerPoint; though, it did eliminate the nagging doubt that some of the slides could be upside down.
While technological instruction is on the rise public speaking is losing its way in today’s curriculums. Many students may know how to network a computer system, and some can text-message at world-championship rates, but they’re at a loss for a place to put their hands when it comes time to address an audience. And sometimes they forget to spit out their gum.
The lack of public speaking skills, however, isn’t limited to the younger generation and even those in the business community may feel trepidation at having to make a presentation.
It doesn’t have to be that way.
