WINNEMUCCA — The man who reportedly ran a Winnemucca Police Department roadblock, allegedly injuring an officer in the process, was found competent to stand trial on charges of assault on an officer with a deadly weapon and failure to stop at the scene of an accident involving personal injury – both category B felonies. Duane David Gray, 42, was in the 6th Judicial District Court on Friday (Jan. 27) for a competency hearing. Competency in Nevada is a two-prong test to determine if the defendant understands the charges he/she is facing and is able to participate in his/her own defense. Judge Michael Montero reviewed the report issued by the mental health professionals who examined the defendant and determined he was competent to stand trial. Therefore, as Montero noted, Friday's hearing was primarily procedural. Without objection, he remanded the case to Union Township Justice Court for a preliminary hearing. According to previous statements, Gray served in a war zone and was later treated for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder while still in the military. Authorities are alleging Gray injured Officer Chad Farstveet by knocking him down with his pickup truck then dragging the officer along when he (the defendant) tried to drive away.
