Got a lead foot? If you're one of those folks who consider the speed limit optional, you may want to ease back on the pedal as the Nevada Highway Patrol has announced a new speed-enforcement campaign. The "Obey the Sign or Pay the Fine" campaign will run through March 22. NHP troopers and Elko, White Pine, Humbolt and Lander County Sheriffs Departments are “Joining Forces” conducting saturation patrols looking for speeding drivers and other hazardous violations. With grant monies secured by the DPS-Office of Traffic Safety, officers will be concentrating enforcement efforts on Nevada’s highways looking for drivers who are exceeding the posted speed limits. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2005, speeding was a contributing factor in more than a third of all fatal crashes in the U.S. and more than 13,000 lives were lost in such crashes. About 14% of the country’s speeding-related fatalities occur on interstate highways each year.
