Green was presented with the Sheriff’s Commendation for exceptional performance during the attack. Bonnie Goodness and Burton Whitehead were given Citizen Commendations for their actions in assisting Green -- despite the risk to their own safety. Green was dispatch on August 17 to the Water Hole Bar in Golconda on the report of a possible vehicle burglary in progress. Almost immediately upon arrival, she was violently attacked by a suspect who allegedly attempted to steal her car. The subject was described by Sheriff Kilgore as being in a drug-induced rage. Green, the sheriff noted, made the decision to fight for her vehicle and the equipment it contained so it could not be used against others. In the process of pulling the suspect from the vehicle, she was hit by him multiple times. An eyewitness wrote that Deputy Green remained calm throughout the encounter and added, “The sheriff did a very professional job of subduing the suspect. She stood up for all our expectations of a police officer.” Goodness and Whitehead, along with a trooper from NHP and a handful of others, assisted Green with in detaining the suspect. Kilgore commented of the bystanders, “They lent a hand to a deputy who needed it. Through their selfless acts we were able to apprehend a violent subject.” The commendations were presented during the meeting of the Humboldt County Commissioners on Monday (Sept. 19). Kilgore told the commissioners it had been an active summer with multiple attacks on HCSO deputies. He commented, “It’s nice and reassuring to know the citizens of Humboldt County will come to our aid when we need it. I felt it was very important to recognize them today.”Sheriff Kilgore presents the Citizen Comendation to Bonnie Goodness. Sheriff Kilgore presents a Citizen Commendation to Burton Whitehead.
