SWAT approach

WINNEMUCCA — The Winnemucca Police Department took top honors during a recent SWAT conference held April 23-26 in Wendover.  No one can say, though, they're resting on their laurels.

Knowing they would have to defend their first-place finish next year, on Thursday (May 3) they went back to training. Taking advantage of the fact the Double Duty Duds building is slated for demolition, the team met in full gear to run scenarios they would most likely face during real events.

SPJ Reader Question: Why won't cops ticket people?

Print

SPJ Reader Question: I have notice that people are driving crazy and very fast in low speed zones. It seems like cops give out too many verbal warnings and not enough tickets. Maybe if cops started handing out tickets, people would slow down.

SPJ Responds: According to Police Chief Eric Silva, the stats for citations v’s verbal warnings show the issuance of citations is pretty high compared to just verbal warnings.  A quick look showed during the week of March 12 officers handed out 16 citations during 21 traffic stops.
