Officers from the Winnemucca Police Department and Humboldt General Hospital Emergency Medical Service were dispatched to a McCoy St. residence on Saturday (February 23) around 7:30 pm, for a report of an accidental shooting. First responders found a 15 year old teenage boy with a single gunshot wound to the right hip/abdominal area. The young man was transported to HGH for medical treatment. He was rushed into surgery in critical condition before being transported by Care Flight to Renown Hospital in Reno. The young man died en route. Preliminary information on scene established three teenage boys had been handling firearms when one of the firearms was accidentally discharged striking the teenage victim at a short distance. WPD Officers were joined at the scene by Humboldt County District Attorney Michael MacDonald. This investigation is still ongoing. Humboldt County School Superintendent Dr. Dave Jensen was notified of the incident to prepare for the needs of school staff and students at school on Monday. |
