On the afternoon of January 30, 2012, a call for service involving an allegation of Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office narcotics K-9 Zyla biting a 5-year-old female was called into the Dispatch center. Due to the fact that K-9 Zyla is a service animal for the Sheriff’s Office, the call for service was referred to the Winnemucca Police Department for a report and any investigation. The Sheriff’s Department is cooperating fully with all aspects of this investigation and K-9 Zyla has been quarantined at the handler’s residence at the request of the City of Winnemucca Police Department. Information is that the injury is a minor superficial scrape to the 5 year old female. According to the statement released by the WPD, Officer Jeff Casalez responded to Humboldt General Hospital and met with the witnesses. The five-year-old female victim had minor injury to her arm which she said was caused by a dog bite. The victim and her parents said the victim had been bitten by Zyla who is a law enforcement drug detection dog handled by Sgt. Lee Dove of the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office. Officer Casalez obtained their statements. Officer Casalez also met with Sgt. Dove and obtained his statement. Zyla's records show that she was current on all vaccinations and was allowed to be quarantined at the residence. Due to the conflicting statements of the witnesses, this report will be submitted to the Humboldt County District Attorney's Office for review. |
