WINNEMUCCA — The identities of the victims in Wednesday’s (Jan. 4) fatal accident on Paradise Summit have been released.

The deceased woman was identified as Dalena Barr, 24, of McDermitt.  Dusty Sam, 24, also of McDermitt, was transported to Humboldt General Hospital, treated for minor injuries, and was released.

The investigation into the fatal accident is being conducted by the Nevada Highway Patrol.

The accident occurred when the vehicle left the roadway and overturned multiple times for hundreds of feet on the way to the bottom of an embankment.

Sgt. Greg Johnson, of the NHP Winnemucca Office, said the accident actually occurred the night before on Tuesday (Jan. 3).  Sam was apparently unconscious all night long.  In the morning he came to, crawled up the embankment, and flagged down a passing motorist.

Barr, who was ejected during the course of the rollover, was apparently not wearing a seatbelt, Johnson said.  Sam was seatbelted.

Sam initially told authorities Barr was his sister.  It appears while the two were close like brother and sister, and Sam considered Barr a sister, they were not actually related, according to Johnson.

NHP is investigating whether or not excessive speed and/or alcohol played a part in the accident.
