Shown: Anita Paquette, left, and Darlene Thon are reaching out to military families who would like to honor their loved ones with a banner.
The American Legion Auxiliary are reaching out to members of the community who want to recognize their loved ones in the military -- or who have previously served -- with banners that will honor their service. The weather-resistant banners will hang from the new light posts on Haskell St. and will be interspersed with the city's patriotic banners.
The City of Winnemucca is donating personnel and equipment to hang the banners. Anita Paquette and Darlene Thon visited with the Winnemucca City Council on Tuesday, and they took the opportunity to display the banners they had made to honor their sons: Corporal Brandon Paquette (1982-2008), USMC, and Petty Officer 2nd Class Robert L. Campbell, USN. On seeing the banners for the first time, Mayor Di An Putnam commented, "They came out really awesome. What a great tribute." Thon said if the response is overwhelming, the plan is to display the first set for three months then switch them out and honor a new set.
Thon said the banners may be purchased at Spare Time Bowling and are (approximately) $35. Those who would like to participate may email her at:
