Seattle man alive after being pulled from wreckage

WINNEMUCCA — Humboldt General Hospital EMS used the jaws of life to extricate a 61-year-old Seattle, Washington man from the wreckage of his vehicle following a rollover accident Tuesday (May 15). The wreck occurred in the early morning hours on I-80 eastbound near milemarker 167.
According to Trooper Chris Meeks, of the Nevada Highway Patrol, the man told troopers he fell asleep at the wheel. The victim was taken first to HGH then to Reno for further care.

Man careflighted from scene of ATV accident

WINNEMUCCA — A 22-year-old man injured in an ATV accident Saturday afternoon (May 12) was careflighted directly from the scene of the accident to Reno.
The man was riding his ATV on the sand dunes north of town when the incident occurred. HGH EMS responded in the Polaris UTV utilized on the sand dunes, but due to the extent of the young man’s injuries the decision was made to careflight him directly from the scene.

CORRECTED: Four injured in motorcycle wreck

WINNEMUCCA — Four locals were injured in a two-motorcycle collision on Fourth St. during the early morning hours on Wednesday (May 9).
According to the statement released by the Winnemucca Police Department, both motorcycles had passengers and all four were injured. The injured were transported by HGH EMS to the hospital; two were transferred to Renown Hospital with what were described as severe injuries.

WINNEMUCCA — A couple were injured in a single-vehicle rollover on Interstate 80 Tuesday afternoon (May 8). The wreck occurred very near the scene of a fatal two-vehicle collision on Sunday, near milemarker 174.
The rollover is being investigated by the Nevada Highway Patrol. According to Trooper Wylie Lund, the couple were assisted as the scene by bystanders until the arrival of HGH EMS paramedics.

Woman killed in Interstate accident

WINNEMUCCA — An adult woman was killed in a two-vehicle collision on Interstate 80 Sunday afternoon (May 6), which happened about three miles west of the city limits.
Neither the woman’s identity nor her hometown were released as of this post.

Man charged with DUI following early morning accident

WINNEMUCCA — A man who reportedly drove his vehicle off the road and into a utility pole was led away from the accident scene in handcuffs.
Alejandro Cervantas-Vaca, 22, was charged with DUI with accident. The wreck occurred on Grass Valley Rd. just south of the city limits Sunday morning (May 6) at about 6 a.m.

UPDATED: Girl killed by passing train

WINNEMUCCA — A pedestrian was killed in the early morning hours on Saturday (April 28) after being struck by a passing freight train. The incident occurred on the tracks parallel to Railroad St. near the Anderson St. intersection.
The victim’s name was not released, but she was described as being a teenager and a student at Lowry High School. Police Chief Eric Silva said the incident remains under investigation, and he anticipated more information would be released on Monday (April 30).
UPDATED: On Monday (April 30) The Humboldt County School District will provide counselors at LHS and the schools attended by the girl's siblings.

LOVELOCK — The husband and wife from Sacramento, Calif., who were involved in the single-vehicle rollover accident near Lovelock on Wednesday (April 25) have both been identified and their next of kin have been notified.
Rita N. Kovalev, 66, who was riding in the right front seat, died at the accident scene while her husband Viktor P. Kovalev, 73, remains in the Intensive Care Unit at Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno. Both were wearing seatbelts.
