SPARKS — A small plane with four onboard made an emergency landing on Interstate 80 Monday (Feb. 22) morning. The pilot of the Cessna 172 told authorities he experienced mechanical interference while flying over Sparks and elected to land the plane as quickly as possible. The plane was piloted by Joseph H. Durousseau, Jr., of Sparks, who had three passengers.
Troopers from the Nevada Highway Patrol were dispatched to the scene and immediately diverted traffic off the Interstate via the westbound Sparks Blvd. off ramp. Vehicles were allowed to re-enter the Interstate on the westbound onramp. One westbound lane was reopened around noon.
Upon confirming the event, NHP immediately contacted the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) who in turned contacted the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). Because there were no fatalities or serious injuries during the mishap, the plane was moved onto the dirt shoulder area adjacent to the freeway.
The NTSB will be investigating the event.
