A shooting spree at the Foot Hood Army Base left 12 dead and 31 wounded today. The alleged shooter was identified as Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, 39, a 14-year-veteran of the armed forces. Hasan was shot four times during the melee, but is expected to survive his injuries. Although there has been some speculation, the exact motive for the shooting spree is unknown. Barbara Stanton, the Family Assistance Center Assistant for the Nevada National Guard Family Programs Department was quick to assure the local community that no soldiers from the Winnemucca area are currently stationed at Fort Hood. Like everyone in the community, Stanton is thankful that no families living in the Winnemucca area lost anyone in the attack, but she expressed concern and empathy to everyone who did lose a loved one. “My condolences to the families,” Stanton stated. “We are saddened by the attack.” |
