NDEP issues air permit for proposed Jungo Rd. landfill

Print

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Division of Environmental Protection (NDEP) issued the first of two required permits to Jungo Land & Investments on Friday (March 5).

After a thorough analysis, a public hearing process and after considering numerous written comments from the interested public, NDEP has found the proposed project meets all applicable state and federal air quality standards and requirements.  Therefore, NDEP is required under federal and state law to issue the air permit.  The air permit outlines guidelines and requirements that NDEP will follow in assuring compliance with operating standards for the protection of public health and the environment.

The issuance of the air permit does not allow construction to commence as this project must still be reviewed and permitted by NDEP's Bureau of Waste Management.

For further information on this project, including permit application, NDEP review and project status, visit the website dedicated to Jungo Landfill at:  Jungo Landfill

WINNEMUCCA — A boil water order issued for Gold Country Estates water users remains in place as of Friday (March 5) afternoon.  The Nevada Department of Environmental Protection is awaiting the results of recent tests before lifting the order, the agency reported. The order may remain in place until Monday.

Grass Valley residents on the system were informed Sunday (Feb. 28) that tests performed two days before tested positive for E. coli.  They were advised to boil their water for one minute before drinking it, using it in food preparation, or for brushing teeth.

Students at Grass Valley Elementary School were provided with bottled water.

This was the second boil water order issued within the last three months to Gold Country Estates water users due to E. coli.

Orlando Obeth Mendoza WINNEMUCCA — The jury trial scheduled for Wednesday, January 27 in the 6th Judicial District Court was cancelled after the defendant agreed late Tuesday evening to a negotiated settlement with the Humboldt County DA’s Office.  Members of the community summoned for jury duty need not report.

The defendant, Orlando Obeth Mendoza, 22,  pleaded no contest to the single charge of possession of more than 1 oz. of marijuana – a category E felony, as part of the negotiated settlement.

Mendoza and two other men were arrested at a Kearns Way residence on Sept. 10 following a raid by the Tri-County Drug Enforcement Team that turned up methamphetamine, marijuana, and guns with obliterated serial numbers.

Fuel leak causes hazardous situation in courthouse parking lot

Print

Ken Howard WINNEMUCCA — Trial delays are inevitable.  While there was a small delay in the trial held this week, it wasn't so additional evidence could be gathered.  Instead, the defendant was pulled out of the courtroom because his vehicle was leaking fuel and causing a hazardous situation in the parking lot of the Humboldt County Courthouse.

This was no minor leak. By the time it was discovered the fuel had pooled and was starting to flow towards the storm drains.  Humboldt County does not have a run-off treatment facility, which means anything that drips into the storm drains eventually pours into the Humboldt River.  Further, the pool of fuel represented a hazard to anyone who might be careless with a lit cigarette.

Firefighters were dispatched to the scene while officers from the Winnemucca Police Department went looking for the car's owner.  Once located, the owner drove the car away.

City employee Ken Howard (shown) shoveled dirt over the fuel.  EPA regulations prevent firefighters from using water to wash the fuel into the storm drains.
